Breast Augmentation Cost

Breast augmentation, as opposed to breast lift or breast reconstruction, simply involves inserting a breast implant to complement the already present breast tissue.  Breast augmentation cost depends on a variety of factors.  Breast augmentation can be done for a variety of reasons, and there are many options depending on what a patient desires as far as aesthetics, and tactile realism go.  Breast augmentation is often part of a “mommy makeover” to remove the effects of a pregnancy or weight loss on a woman's body.  Breast reconstruction often includes the addition of a breast implant as part of the procedure, but is a different and much more invasive procedure that is done most commonly after surgical treatment for cancer.

Breast augmentation cost depends on a variety of factors.  The type of implant, saline or silicone-filled, determines one of the factors of cost.  The facility determines part of the cost, and whether the procedure is done on an outpatient or inpatient basis in a hospital.  Breast augmentation cost also varies by the surgeon and part of the country a patient is receiving treatment in.  It typically costs between $5000 and $10,000.  Breast augmentation cost is not usually covered by health insurance, because it is considered an elective procedure.

Incisions for breast implants can be located in several locations; around the areola of the nipple, in the armpit, and under the breast.  Areola, under the breast and underarm incisions are usually the most desirable incisions because having a nearly invisible scar, or one that is not on the breast at all, are the  most aesthetic choices.  Implants can be placed above the pectoral muscle, below it, or partially underneath it.  All of these factors depend on the patient's physique, they type of implant being inserted, and how much enlargement is being done.   The procedure typically takes between one and two hours.

Implants come in a variety of sizes, which are usually listed by their fluid volume, usually from 120-850cc's.  Patients have choices of filler (saline and silicone), material of the implant itself, textures, and shape of the implant.  Different implant profiles, meaning how thick the implant is, are available as well.

The Food and Drug Administration has only approved saline breast implants to be used at 18 years old and silicone-filled implants to be used after 22 years old.
