Tummy Tuck Scars

Many patients are concerned about tummy tuck scars. Tummy tucks, also known as abdominoplasty, are procedures that remove abdominal skin and tighten abdominal muscles to reduce sagging abdominal skin. To successfully complete the full surgery, an incision must be made that spans from pelvic bone to pelvic bone, or nearly. A mini tummy tuck can have somewhat smaller tummy tuck scars, but is much less effective.

Tummy tuck scars are placed low on the abdomen so that they can be concealed with a bikini bottom, and patients often have the site concealed with a tattoo. Patients who are considering abdominoplasty should be in good health, and heal well, to insure the scarring is as minimal as possible. The best candidates for abdominoplasties are individuals who are healthy and near their target weight. Abdominoplasties are most effective when a patient no longer needs to lose weight, but needs the sculpting effects that the procedure offers. Patients who have chronic health issues such as diabetes can have healing problems when they have any type of surgery, and may make them poor candidates for a surgery that is done for aesthetic reasons. Healing issues of any kind should be disclosed to a surgeon before any procedure.

Tummy tuck scars are counterbalanced on an aesthetic level by the fact that it is the only way to treat patients with severe stretch marks. Because a great deal of the skin of the lower abdomen is entirely removed means that the stretch marks that are common after pregnancy or abrupt weight gain are completely removed. Most of the skin that is removed is from a tummy tuck lies in a triangle that extends from just below the belly button to where the hip bones are found to the front of the body. The belly button is usually relocated so that the skin above the belly button can be stretched to cover the lower abdomen. This tightens the skin over the lower abdomen, which is the most common goal of the surgery.

Abdominoplasties are a common part of a mommy makeover, repairing the aesthetic effects of pregnancy on a patient's body. Men undergo tummy tuck surgery as well, frequently to correct loose skin after a dramatic weight loss. Tummy tucks are often accompanied by liposuction to get a more sculpted effect.

Tummy tuck scars are an unfortunate and unavoidable side effect of this surgery. However, tummy tucks give dramatic abdomen tightening results, which cannot be obtained in any other way. Dr. Emily Pollard is happy to consult with patients in the Philadelphia area about tummy tuck scars and the benefits of abdominoplasty.
